Firefox Vs. Internet Explorer

Posted on January 21st, 2007 in browser, internet, software by Ankit Duseja

Both the browsers have been a great software since past years. However Internet Explorer have a greater experience than Firefox. I’ve made a detailed study of both the browser & here are the results:

1. Add-On Support
Both browsers have a support for add-on, however it is easy to manage add-ons in Firefox. Also the Firefox add-ons are easy to build than Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer has many of the add-ons built-in, but in Firefox you have to install each add-on separately.

2. Theme Support
Firefox support themes whereas Internet Explorer does not support themes. There are many themes available for Firefox for free.

3. Security
Here Internet Explorer wins for security because of ActiveX Control.

4. Stability

Internet Explorer is more stable than Firefox. I’ve seen Firefox crashing many times in many computers. It crashes mainly because if we shutdown the computer without closing Firefox properly. Also after this when windows scans the computer after improper shutdown many times it display errors with Firefox files.

5. Ease Of Use
Firefox has a much easy interface than Internet Explorer. Theme support also makes Firefox much easier.

6. Bookmarks Or Favorites
Firefox bookmarks are easier to organize than favorites of Internet Explorer. Also Firefox lets you backup your bookmarks, which Internet Explorer don’t allow.

7. Password Manager
Firefox again takes the lead here. Firefox has inbuilt password manager whereas Internet Explorer don’t have. Also Firefox lets you create a master password to manage your all passwords for websites.

8. Page View
Firefox engine gives a good output than Internet Explorer. Firefox engine understands more formats than Internet Explorer. Both the browser support fullscreen mode. Internet Explorer comes with a built in showcase, however showcase add-on can be installed in Firefox.

Recommended:
For Home Use – Firefox
Due to ease of use, theme support, easy to manage add-on’s,etc.

For Office Use – Internet Explorer
Due to Security, Stability,etc.

Final Result:

Firefox Wins Over Internet Explorer.

Note:
The above comparisons were made on the basis of following versions:
1. Internet Explorer – 7
2. Firefox – 2

Tests carried out by trust security sites show Firefox has less security loops and flaws.

IE has a way to export favorites. Simply click file?Export>Choose Favorites> email or save to portable media or file and email file. It makes a cool web page of all of you favorites that you can keep on your links page. I test all of my pages in Firefox, IE 4,5,6,7, and 8 and in Opera and my cel phone before a launch but IE crashes less than firefox and both firefox and IE beat Opera in crash ratings. I also hate the fact that Firefox steals all of your IE shortcuts and will not allow you to launch IE after install. I have to install firefox first and then install IE because IE doesn’t care about firefox shortcuts but firefox wants to kill all of your IE shortcuts without uninstalling IE. I can run Linux or unix or run Firefox all without hating on Microsoft. I did like the IE4,5,6 icons that were eliminated in IE7 and The save offline web page features that were lost in IE7 and I think Microsoft should be careful because some of the most talented people in the world are hating IE more and more and are working as hard as they can to Firefox, Linux, and the OpenOffice project more usable every day. I have 3 computers already running “Totally Free OS systems” (Linux, Openoffice, and Firefox) but I still find less reliability and ease of use than Vista or XP. (XP is still better but has less support). Gates would love everyone to buy a Mac so he could get REALLY RICHER with every purchase but Opera still sucks and so spending 3 times as much to go slower and still have freezes and crashes just so you don’t have to run antivirus software doesn’t make enough sense yet. If IE was just a little more configurable it would slaughter Firefox but in a heads up contest as they are right now IE still wins. Take your pages straight out of Dreamweaver and Flash and try them for yourself and you will see what I mean.

I really don’t like the way that IE doesn’t support W3C Standards for (X)HTML as well as Firefox does. It’s kind of annoying to to learn what you can and can’t do for most browsers, and then learn another list for IE just because it doesn’t follow the rules like everyone else. Maybe I’m wrong, I mean, I’m only 14, I make mistakes. More than a lot of people. But I am stubborn on this matter, and until I hear something to prove me wrong, I will stick with firefox all the way.
