Changing the name in Gtalk/Gmail is the issue which many people find it difficult to do so. After getting the same query each month by some one or the other, I decided to write the procedure in an article. Well changing the name is not at all difficult but you have to dig around a little in Gmail.
Here is the 11 step process with an image flowchart that will easily let you change your name in Gmail/Gtalk. (Click on the image at right to enlarge it.)

- Sign in to you Google Account.
- Go to “My Account” Page.
- Click on Edit Link.
- Enter your First name & last name here.
- Click on “Save”.
- Now open Gmail.
- Click on settings.
- Then go to the accounts tab.
- Click on edit info.
- Now you can either select the name you just changed in the above step or you can type a new name you want to use for Gmail/Gtalk.
- Click on “Save”.
That’s it. Your (new) name will appear in Gtalk & will also be attached when you will compose an email.
NOTE: You cannot have different names in gtalk and gmail through a same account.

I was also facing the same problem. But i found the real solution for that. If your friends are not able to see your current display name or id. It is from thier side and not from your side. If you are adding a person today and he is having a orkut name as “xxx yyy”, then you gtalk will show his name as “xxx yyy”. the gtalk stores the name based on the date you added them. now, what you have to do is, tell your friends to change your display name manually. and it will last forever. hope this helps.
